To all our friends:

And here we include all Members of the Regiment, Ex-members, Members of the Regimental Council, Members of the Regimental Association, Flanking Units and all others associated with The Transvaal Scottish (as well as those unlucky enough to have given me your e-mail address!)

This hopefully irregular monthly communication has the purpose to give out some pertinent information regarding the activities of the Regiment. This falls directly under the directive of the Chief of the Army, and it is also the intention of the Officer Commanding Lt. Col. D. Smythe to open the communication channels within the Greater Jocks Family. “Open and greater communication makes for better understanding.”

The Officers, Warrant Officers, Non-commissioned Officers, men and women of the Transvaal Scottish wish you all a prosperous and peaceful 2010

Events in The Regiment

Mobilisation

The Transvaal Scottish is mobilizing a Company this weekend for pre-deployment training. This training is to “sharpen up” the troops prior to a long period of external deployment helping to fulfil South Africa’s peace-keeping role in Africa. We wish them all the best of luck and to be safe.

Gold Cup

The 3rd to the 6th March sees a contingent of "marksmen" in Bloemfontein competing in the annual Gold Cup Shooting competition. L/Cpl. Alex MacLean has the arrangements in hand for the competition, starting with ELAC training next week. For those of you who don't know what an ELAC is - it's a piece of electronic wizardry that pretends to be an R4 on a virtual shooting range. You only miss the smell of cordite in the morning!

Pipe Band - please support them!

The Regimental Pipes and Drums are competing on the following dates:
6th March: The African Skye Solo Piping and Drumming Championships
20th March: CBC Boksburg Gathering
27th March: Lyttelton Manor Gathering (to be confirmed)

Regimental Ball - Click Here for details

The Annual Regimental Ball is being held on the 27th March at the Bergvallei Country Estate. The Regiment is still looking for some sponsors for the evening, and of course more ticket sales!

Delville Wood Parade

Our annual Sollum / Honours Day Parade which is normally scheduled for January has been postponed until July. There are several reasons for this, the main one being that the preparations for the deployment took up lot of the manpower and time required. July has been chosen as it is also one of our Battle Commemorations - namely Delville Wood. Please mark the 18th July 2010 in your diary.

Officers’ Mess Dinner

May is our Annual Officers Mess Dinner. Maj. Sean Culhane is busy with the arrangements, and at present he is deciding on the venue as well as the date - provisionally arranged for the 21st May. Anyone interested in attending can e-mail the 2IC at sean.culhane@goldfields.co.za. Invitations will naturally be sent out when the final arrangements have been made.

Regimental Open Day

Following on the huge success of our “first-try” Regimental Open Day in 2009, it has been decided (by the powers that be!) to have this as an annual event. The date set for 2010 is now the 2nd October.

Eisbein Club

On an informal note - the "Eisbein Club" has has now been in existence for over 20 years! An absolutely informal, unofficial and relaxed get-together every First Thursday of the month. It is for people who enjoy good food, good beer, good Jagermeister and good company, and who somewhere had a military connection (however vague that may be or have been!) The get together happens at:

Schwabinger Stuben Restaurant,

387 Main Street,

Ferndale

From about 12H30. Wear a tie - or you get fined!

Every so often we even get a Piper to play - the expressions on the faces of the other clientele is something to see!

Something Arbitrary

Many thanks to Brian Bunyard for sending me the picture you see here. Is there anyone who can give us a name and a date please?

This is what Mr. Bunyard wrote in reply when asked if there was any information as to the origins of the picture:

Dear Maj van 't Hof

I really do not know but the post card was sold at the war museum many years ago, two others were done also namely, Wit Rifles and the S.A.Irish, my guess is that it would have been somewhere in the early to mid sixties, maybe your Regimental Historian can identify the drum major in the picture and maybe give you a more accurate date.

Regards

Brian Bunyard

ANYONE GOT A SET FOR OUR MUSEUM?

Alba Nam Buadh - And wishing you all the best until next time
