The Victoria Falls is one of the largest and most breathtaking waterfalls in the world. The Falls have a width of over 1,7 km, plunging some 70-108 metres into the gorge below at the rate of 550 million litres per minute during the high-water season. The force of this immense volume of water sends a plume of mist as high as 500 metres into the air which can be seen at a great distance giving rise to the local name of Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders). Entrance to the Victoria Falls is just before the border post. Here you will walk through the rain forest with beautiful Mahogany, Ebony, Date Palm and Fig trees and numerous species of birds and small mammals. There are many viewpoints of the Falls and each will offer a unique and breathtaking view at different times during the day. At the end of the walk and after crossing the bridge, you will find views of Danger Point which offers a view of the Eastern Cataract and the "Boiling Pot" where the Zambezi narrows into the gorge below. Apart from spending time at the Park, there are plenty of other activities to keep you entertained during your stay at Victoria Falls. Curio shops and open-air craft markets offer beautiful hand-crafted items from around the continent. An aerial view of the Falls is a must and there are several ways of doing this. Helicopters, small aircraft, microlights and ultralights all provide unique and varied ways of viewing the Falls from the air. Bungee jumping is for the bravest, and the jump from the Victoria Falls Bridge at 111 meters is one of the highest in the world! Water sports include rafting and kayaking through the gorge below the Falls, and boating, fishing and canoeing on the Zambezi above the Falls. A cruise on the river is a perfect way to relax at the end of the day with tranquil vistas and spectacular sunsets. |
